What is Galvanising?

What is Galvanising?

Hot-dip galvanising is a method used to protect steel from corrosion. Our suppliers dip the finished product into a bath of molten zinc. This process causes a reaction between the steel and the zinc, to form an alloy, which then creates a metallurgical bond to the surface of the steel. Layers of zinc form on the surface, giving the steel a tough and abrasion-resistant coating. This finishing process ensures maintenance-free steel for many years to come.

What are the Benefits?

Prevents Corrosion

Protects steel for many years to come, and is not unusual for it to last up to 100 years. Steel surfaces, even if hidden, internal or external are galvanised. Zinc forms a barrier on the steel, preventing it from reacting with the elements in the environment.

Cost-Effective

The initial cost of galvanizing is comparable to repeating our standard paint finishing process two times, however, given that galvanising is maintenance-free and doesn’t require the upkeep of a standard paint finish, the overall cost works out to be far more cost-effective.

Damage Protection

Provides resistance to mechanical damage, from handling during transit, installation, and any future impacts. If the coating is damaged, by force of impact, the zinc sacrifices itself to protect the steel underneath it. This response is because zinc is a more reactive than steel.

Environmental

Reduces energy demand on the environment due to being maintenance-free and its longevity. All by-products and waste energy from the galvanising process are recycled, by our supplier, and used in other parts of the process and/or in other industries.

Process

Our supplier galvanises all material following international Hot Dip Galvanising Standard ISO 1461.
